Did You Know a Donkey Actually Spoke in the Bible?
In Numbers 22:28–30, God opened the mouth of Balaam’s donkey to rebuke the prophet—revealing divine surprise and spiritual warning.
1. The Unforgettable Story of Balaam and His Donkey
In Numbers 22:21–41, Balaam sets out with Moabite envoys seeking to curse Israel. God, angered by Balaam’s motives, dispatches an angel with a drawn sword to intercept him. Balaam’s donkey, seeing the angel three times, veers off the road, crushes Balaam’s foot, then lies down when blocked. Balaam beats the donkey in frustration.
Then a miraculous turn: “The Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam…” —asking why Balaam struck her three times (Numbers 22:28). The donkey says: “Am I not your donkey, which you have ridden all your life… have I ever treated you this way before?” (Numbers 22:30). Balaam admits he did wrong, and then God opens Balaam’s eyes spiritually to see the angel.
2. How Did the Donkey Speak? Divine Intervention at Work
BibleHub explains Balaam’s donkey speaking was not a natural phenomenon—it was a clear act of divine intervention: “Then the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey…” allowing a normally speechless animal to speak with a human voice.
2 Peter 2:16 refers back to this incident, describing Balaam as “rebuked ... by a donkey, otherwise without speech, that spoke with a man’s voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.”

This event challenges assumptions: the prophet was spiritually blind, but the donkey perceived heaven’s threat. Hermeneutics commentary notes that the angel repeated the donkey’s words, showing the speech came from God—not Balaam or the donkey.
The donkey’s loyalty and prophetic insight—despite being beaten—highlight divine paradox: God often speaks through unexpected, overlooked sources.
4. The Story’s Deeper Spiritual Themes
Divine sovereignty over creation: God can override natural limitations to communicate truth.
Spiritual blindness vs. perceptive loyalty: Balaam, a gifted seer, missed divine warning; the donkey—obedient but humble—saw what mattered.
Warning against spiritual arrogance: Balaam was motivated by prestige and gain; his donkey stood between him and the angel of death, urging repentance.
5. Contemporary Application: Listening to Unlikely Voices
FaithLabz commentary reflects on modern parallels: God still speaks through humble messengers—the patient coworker, the uncomfortable truth-teller, the still small voice beneath cultural noise.
Are there “donkeys” in your life—people or circumstances—warning you of wrong paths? Are you willing to listen, even if they lack authority or polish?
6. Biblical Reflection and Personal Response
Prayerfully consider:
- When have you missed God’s warning because of spiritual pride?
- Who is your modern-day donkey, offering a warning or insight you need to hear?
- How can you cultivate humility to receive unexpected instruction?
As Proverbs 12:15 warns: “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes…”—we must invite God’s correction in all forms.
